Water is essential for all the cells and organs to function properly. Keeping hydrated is crucial for health and well-being, but many people do not consume enough fluids each day. However, there is no universally agreed quantity of water that must be consumed daily.

Here are some reasons our body needs water:

1. It lubricates the joints

The cartilage that makes up the joints and discs of the spine is made up of 80% water. Prolonged dehydration can interfere with the shock-absorbing ability of the joints leading to joint pain.

2. It forms saliva and mucus

Saliva aids in digestion. Mucus helps to keep the mouth, nose, and eyes moist preventing friction and damage to the organs.

3. It boosts skin health and beauty

Dehydration makes skin vulnerable to skin disorders and premature wrinkling.

4. It delivers oxygen throughout the body

Blood carries oxygen to different parts of the body and blood is made out of more than 90% water.

5. It cushions the brain, spinal cord, and other sensitive tissues

Dehydration affects brain structure and function. Prolonged dehydration can lead to problems with thinking and reasoning.

6. The digestive system depends on it

Dehydration can lead to digestive problems such as constipation or an overly acidic stomach increases the risk of heartburn and stomach ulcers.

7. It regulates body temperature

Water is usually stored in the middle layers of the skin. When the body heats up it comes to the skin’s surface as sweat and cools the body.

When there is too little water in the body, heat storage increases and the individual is less able to tolerate heat strain.

8. It flushes body waste

Water is needed for the processes of excretion such as sweating, urine, and feces. Toxins in the body are excreted by these processes which require water.

9. It helps maintain blood pressure

Dehydration causes blood to become thicker, which in turn increases blood pressure.

10. It prevents kidney damage

The kidneys regulate fluid in the body. Insufficient water can lead to kidney stones and other problems.
